2013년 2월 11일 정오(로마 현지 시각) 교황 베네딕토 16세는 2월 28일 오후 8시에 건강상의 이유로 교황직을 사임한다고 발표하였다.

사랑하는 형제들이여.
오늘 추기경 회의를 소집한 것은 성인 3명을 시성하기 위한 것뿐 아니라, 교회의 앞날과 관련한 중요한 결정에 대해 전하기 위해서 입니다. 하느님 앞에 나의 양심을 반복해 되돌아본 결과, 저는 고령으로 인해 더이상 교황직을 수행하는 데 적합하지 않다는 확신에 이르게 됐습니다.
교황직은 그 본질적인 영적 특성 때문에 말과 행동뿐 아니라 기도와 고난으로 수행돼야 한다는 사실을 저는 잘 알고 있습니다. 그러나 오늘날엔 너무나 빠른 세상의 변화와 독실한 신앙생활에 대한 의문들로 인해 베드로 성인을 잇고 복음을 전파하기 위해선 몸과 마음의 강건함 모두가 필요합니다. 하지만 저는 최근 몇달 동안 쇠약해지면서 제게 맡겨진 이 사도직을 수행할 능력이 부족하다는 것을 깨닫게 됐습니다.
이런 이유로, 저는 이 결정의 중요성을 충분히 인식하면서 2005년 4월19일 추기경단이 나에게 부여한 성베드로의 후계자인 교황직을 2월28일 오후 8시에 내려놓겠다는 것을 완전한 자유의지로 선언합니다. 저는 또한 교황을 사임하는 이런 행동의 심각성도 잘 인식하고 있습니다. 이제 교황직은 공석이 될 것이며 이후, 새 교황을 뽑는 콘클라베(비밀 추기경 회의)가 소집될 것입니다.
사랑하는 형제들이여, 그동안 제게 보여준 사랑과 지지에 깊이 감사드리며 저의 허물이 있었다면 용서를 구합니다. 이제 교회를 우리의 최고 목자이며 우리 주이신 예수 그리스도께 맡기고, 성모 마리아께서 새 교황을 선출하는 추기경들을 어머니의 사랑으로 도와주시길 간청합니다. 저는 또한 앞으로 남은 인생을 성스러운 교회에 봉직하는 데 헌신할 것을 바랍니다.
Dear Brothers,
I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the barque of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.
Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.''
